setting of fried green tomatoes

i believe that Fannie Flagg has made the setting a character by developing it in full. "'It's a good thing I love trains, because Whistle Stop wasn't never nothing more than a railroad town,..'"(102). In this example it explains how this little town was formed from the railroad station in town. The constant stream of people from the station that stop in at the restaurant develop a center place for the town, a meeting place of the community which is very important to the novel."Idgie says that for the people who know her not to worry about getting poisoned, she is not cooking. all the cooking is being done by two colored women, Sipsey and Onzell, and the barbecue is being cooked by Big George.."(3). This second example shows the racism still left in the book that is part of the setting because it is of this time period where white and blacks were still separated. The importance of this is to show how people will be acting because of the time period and will reflect on the towns acts later in the novel ,which considering the setting to be a character,it will influence the acts of whites versus blacks, and also expose characters in the book that are doing what they should be or shouldn't be based on the general belief of society at this time.

  1. When i was doing the setting assignment i included the fact that the book was written during a time where racism was very big in America, especially i n the South. With this being said, i completely agree with you when you say "The importance of this is to show how people will be acting because of the time period and will reflect on the towns acts later in the novel..." The setting of this book has a big impact on the main character Idgie. Since a majority of the people are racist Idgie really stands out when she treats the blacks just as equal as she treats the whites. Another big part of the setting is the fact that the book is also written during the time of the depression. This really gives readers an idea of the struggles they face while reading the book.

  2. I actually love what you wrote but I wish you included more. Like how it wasn't just in Whistle stop cafe, but in other places of Alamaba and two different time periods. Also I'm surprised that no one really mention how Evelyn's time period was actually the present time when the book first came out in 1987. I think she did that to realate to her readers more at the time because she saw alot of people who were in Evelyn's position.

  3. Deedee2 i would have to disagree with you. I dont think idgie treated blacks and whites the same. I think that she wanted to, but because of the time period she couldnt or else she would get in alot of trouble.
Sylarlover 1.love your nane. And 2. I love how you pointed out that fact i never knew that that was the same time period. And since you pointed that ou tjat makes me think that sje made the settting during the dpression and earlier, was because the older generation would be able to read and relate also.

  4. I agree because how could Whistle stop have existed without the railroads? For one, this was a time when blacks were not allowed anywhere and the KKK was firing up. Also everyone was so exhausted from traveling so long on a train that they stopped at Whistle Stop and wrote it on trains and told people in other towns so everyone would know they make they best food forcheap and that is where they should stop to eat.

  5. Antonio2- Very clear and to the point post! Nice job!

DeeDee2- You rock for including a quote from the post! That is a great way of ensuring that you explicitly consider what the "poster" said.
